OMEGA: What We Carry: A Ritual Retreat for Mothers (caretakers) Grieving the Living
May 29-31, 2026| Rhinebeck, NY
Details + registration COMING SOON!

What We Carry is a weekend of rest, reclaimed joy, remembrance, and sacred reflection for mothers grieving the living—those loving a child through addiction, mental illness, estrangement, incarceration, or rupture in the family system.

Through practices of embodied movement and storytelling, deep rest, communal song, creative expression, and the healing power of kinship, we create space to meet what has been carried—to feel, honor, and integrate the many layers of grief while remembering love and reimagining a hope that endures.

Guided by movement and voice alchemist Joy Lynn Okoye and ancestral vocalist Sheniqua Trotman, this retreat invites you to move, sound, and express through the arts what words cannot hold—to remember through story and rhythm, to breathe together through the ache, and to let body and voice find liberation and become one prayer. Within this sacred kinship of mothers and maternal caregivers, we witness and are witnessed, drawing strength from our shared presence and the collective remembrance that freedom—like love—can still rise from pain.

Here, grief becomes a choir of courage, tenderness, and truth. At the heart of this work is The Sacred Both™—the practice of holding grief and gratitude, loss and love, release and remembrance in the same breath. Within this kinship, sorrow and joy coexist, each deepening the other. Both are holy. Both belong.

Class Descriptions:

The Deep Revival: Dance Church & Deep Rest Practice W/ Joy..... A body-led soul revival. Move, sound, and rest your way back to center in this dance church for deep feelers and modern mystics

A ritual for our times — part live reading, part song and movement ceremony, part deep-rest immersion.
Each SoulEase Sunday opens with a spoken reflection from Joy, moves into Communal Song led by Sheniqua Trotman, flows through a movement ritual guided by Joy, and settles into a Yoga Nidra–inspired deep rest

This Is What Happens at The Deep Revival...

We Move – The body is the mother tongue and the first church. Through movement, we meet the obstacle, shake off stagnation, and clear the way forward.
We Feel – No more bypassing. We meet ourselves with presence, power, and compassion.
We Breathe – The breath is Spirit, Source, Life. Inhale. Exhale. Return.
We Become Still – In the stillness, wisdom arrives. Yoga Nidra and meditation to restore and remember.
We Listen – In the quiet, your truth rises.
We Remember – We are a people, a tribe of love, awakening to our past, our present, and our future.

JourneyDance® W/ Joy.....

We hold our unexpressed, unprocessed emotions in the body. We carry this for ourselves and others. Let’s join together to breathe and dance, unravel the binds that hold, make amends with our bodies, and move into love, joy, acceptance, and freedom.

Utilizing the experiential magic of JourneyDance™, embodiment practices, slow-flowing movement, yoga poses, breath practices, and creative surrender (Yoga Nidra) we create an environment for inner reflection and self-healing work for our bodies, minds, hearts, and dreams. Each week will be a thematic journey to initiate a sacred shift of perspective that helps us to remember and receive the grace of being alive.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra, builds upon the relaxed physical and mental state from the preceding Yin postures. Known as Yogic Sleep – Yoga Nidra is a state of consciousness similar to the process of drifting off to sleep. It is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of their inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. This state of consciousness is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required.

The Remedy

Our stories are our power. Our stories have shaped us, informed us, and taught us, and for some, these (stories have harmed us…) When we step into our power and claim and own our stories, we RECLAIM our beautiful shining selves, in a good way. As a culture of the “perfectionistic view”, we have become too closed and conditioned to share ourselves freely. Many of us only feel safe to share under special conditions. When we share our stories and find our OWN MEANING, we can heal and connect back into the joy of living, the gratitude for this ONE PRECIOUS LIFE. Joy and Toni bravely create those conditions by being our authentic selves with you. We will share with you our stories, make you laugh and make you cry...sing to you and dance with you. You will do the same, allowing your truths to be revealed. Joy and Toni create a sacred container to process the range of emotions that comes with this intense time.

We share musical medicine along with writing prompts, expression practices, and sharing circles each session.

During the Remedy each week we will...

Hold space for you
DJ a 20-30 minute dance set of expressive music
Give a writing prompt or suggestion and 10-20 minutes to write
Hold a sharing circle (in break out rooms)
Help you create a personal practice of movement, writing, and sharing

Discover the rejuvenating synergy of movement and mindfulness in Gentle Somatic Yoga. This class draws inspiration from embodiment work, meditation, and yin yoga, intertwining flowing floor-based movements with Gentle Yoga principles. Through non-weight-bearing exercises emphasizing sliding, gliding, and circular motions, we nurture inner awareness and a profound connection with your body's innate wisdom. By harmonizing breath and movement, we enhance the respiratory rhythm, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and inner clarity. Guided by breath and awareness, each pose unfolds slowly, allowing adjustments and inner reflection. In this gentle, playful class, we cultivate both physical and mental strength, concluding with deep relaxation and guided meditation. Yoga props enrich our practice, fostering restoration, rejuvenation, and holistic well-being in an inclusive and supportive environment.

What is JourneyDance™?

''We are Brave and we are Courageous every time our precious feet touch the dance floor. Our sacred stories of who we are and who we are becoming breathe and expand through each movement. Each dance becomes a living testimony of our divine beauty. We remember who we are. All are welcome here. This is your invitation." -Joy Lynn Okoye

It is well established that dance and movement may influence healing, change our bodies, and affect our emotional well-being.

JourneyDance™ moves us through deep, personal exploration into a loving, intimate relationship with body, mind, and source energy. This sensual and exhilarating union of dance, visualization, and ritual calls us to get funky and divine!

We are carried through an intentional and seamless flow of simple movement sequences and free expression. We are led with exuberance and compassion to a place of authentic communication with our creative spirit, where we discover our hearts’ desires.

We embody our physical temple. We explore our inner realms. We connect with our inner shaman creator to burn the mind’s clogging clutter and make space for the abundance of joy that is available to us. As we create this powerful ritual together-in community-we liberate old cellular memories, cleanse the body and mind with sweat and breath, and elevate our vibration.

As a Holistic Health Coach and JourneyDance™ teacher I incorporate HAES principles into all of my work. My purpose on the dance floor is to invite others to listen to their hearts desires and their souls yearnings while letting the movements and MUSIC become the guide into that sacred realm. My number one mission is to spread divine love and light while promoting a culture of self-compassion and BODY LOVE. I believe that the surest path into a healthy lifestyle is through Embracing your story, Embodying your present moment, and Empowering your desires. All are welcome, let's journey together....

A word about ‘Grieving Circles’ and 'Liberation Parties'
(See below about special pricing)

Dance and ritual have long been used to heal from traumatic experiences since ancient times. Sometimes words are not enough, and dance and ritual can be useful to fill this gap. Dance as a healing tool is rooted in the knowledge that body and mind are inseparable. Dance provides a direct experience of shared emotion on a preverbal and physical level, providing feelings of unity, harmony, and empathy.

The JourneyDance™ Grieving Circle Ceremony

We will co-create a supportive ceremony as a place for healing and remembering of the loved one. A customized Grieving Circle incorporates healing music, dance, movement, very little spoken word, and a space for stillness. As the facilitator of the group, I will encourage the group members to listen to the guidance of their own bodies and never push people to engage beyond their own comfort level and physical ability. The experience can be a full session including physical warm-ups (simple breathing and stretching ) and a selection of healing music and movements to take the participants on a journey of release and receiving, or as simple as a few songs to create a memorable moment for the loved one.

**Pricing for Grieving Circles are negotiated per event/Love donation for organization/family will be included.

Liberation Parties

A Liberation Party is a way to mark the end of the pain and suffering that comes with a divorce or serious break-up and it provides a ritualistic and comforting way to cope with any difficult life transition. In a JourneyDance™ Liberation party you may cry, laugh, yell and scream- whatever you need to do-and finally just let go of whatever needs letting go...and then we celebrate your new beginning with laughter, affirmations, and loving support with your friends and family.

Prices:  JourneyDance™ Celebration and Liberation packages begin at $200 and are between 1.5-3 hours

What people are saying....

"I feel so lucky and blessed to have found Joy Okoye here on the East coast. I hadn't lived here long and was looking for a place to dance and a place for mutual support. I didn't want a typical 'support group', I wanted a co-empowerment group! And this is exactly what Joy does. She is an incredible soul with a brilliant passionate heart. She has this wonderful way of holding space for people to have their own experience and do what they need to do, but at the same time know they are not alone. She shares her inner self and shines unapologetically in a way that makes room for us all to step up and do it too. What Joy shares-- isn't just dance, --It Is Healing." ~ Jessica Zerr Vanek, N.J.

"Joy Okoye is extraordinary! She embodies true vision, grace, courage, spirit, and shakti! Not only does she soar as a dancer, she inspires those around her (including me) to find their own dance." ~ Kathleen C. Haynie, NJ

"I've had the pleasure of experiencing Joy's remarkable skills as a Transformational Movement Facilitator on several occasions. While you can tell Joy really has her technique down, I think her real strength is in how she includes and encourages participants. Joy is a positive and kind professional with real talent and leadership skills. It's always a great learning experience to be part of one of her seminars and/or classes. "
– Rebecca French, Princeton, NJ

"Joy Okoye teaches her Journey Dance classes with intelligence, finesse, enthusiasm, ferocity, and humor. Joy manages the time carefully as there is truly a Journey to take within the length of the class. She meticulously coordinates her music playlists to take the students on that transcendent journey. Joy prepares well for her classes. She creates a magical environment for her students with only lights, sound, and space. No pun intended--but she is a joy to work with because she is compassionate and she has a great sense of humor. Every work place benefits from an environment infused with laughter and compassion. I highly recommend hiring Joy at your facility and also TAKE her classes!"  –Wendy Rolfe Evered,  Princeton, NJ
